Larcenies are up in Alexandria from January through July, compared to the same time period last year, according to new data from the Alexandria City Police Department (ACPD).
Burglaries, aggravated assault, robberies and car thefts are all down comparing January to July 2024 to 2023.
The data dashboard, which is frequently updated, shows Part 1 crimes, which include homicide, aggravated assault, rape, burglary, larceny, robbery and stolen vehicles.
In the time period from January to the end of July, there were a total of 2,687 Part 1 crimes, compared to 2,367 from January to July of last year. Larcenies, which are defined by the FBI as "the unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property," was responsible for the increase.
To avoid larceny, officials say people should not leave anything unattended (wallet, keys, phone, etc.), even for a minute. Be sure to lock cars and remove valuables.
Correction: An earlier version of this article mentioned homicides, however incidents that occurred this year have not been classified yet.
