With Sears and Avis the only remaining businesses open at Landmark Mall, Alexandria officials are inviting residents to share their ideas for the 51-acre property.
Landmark Mall closed in early 2017 after years of decline, paving the way for property owner Howard Hughes Corp. to redevelop most of the site. Howard Hughes Corp. is still negotiating with Seritage, the Sears real estate holding company, about that portion of the site. Hundreds of Sears locations have closed in the past few years, but the Landmark location remains open.
On the other side of the mall, the Carpenter's Shelter moved into a portion of the former Macy's while a new, dedicated shelter is built in North Old Town.
The City of Alexandria will be hosting meetings this winter and spring for residents to engage with the redevelopment process. The first meeting is Nov. 14 in the evening in the Cameron Station community.
Here's the community engagement invitation press release from the City of Alexandria:
The Landmark Mall Re-Planning Process, identified as a priority of Alexandria City Council’s approved Fiscal Year 2019 Long-Range Planning Work Plan, will officially launch with a community meeting on November 14. This process will build from the existing community vision, established in the 2009 Landmark/Van Dorn Corridor Plan, for a new Landmark Mall as a mixed-use center with transit and community open spaces.
While most of the 2009 Plan elements will remain the same, this community process will consider some refinements such as new uses, incorporating flexibility of uses, and incorporating recently adopted City policies to promote traffic safety and multimodal transportation. This planning effort will result in the consideration of a master plan amendment to the 2009 Landmark/Van Dorn Corridor Plan, which serves as the guide for future development plans.
The City of Alexandria is seeking public input through the following community engagement opportunities:
- Community Meeting: Wednesday, November 14, 7-9 p.m. in the Cameron Station Great Room (200 Cameron Station Blvd.).
- Community Open House: Wednesday, December 12, 7-9 p.m. at Brandywine Living (5550 Cardinal Place)
- Community Workshop: Saturday, January 26, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. (location to be announced)
- Community Meeting: Wednesday, February 27, 7-9 p.m. (location to be announced)
