Commuters who use the King Street Metro station will see some changes starting Sunday, Nov. 18.
The King Street Metrorail Station Access Project will shut down Kiss and Ride for the next 18 months and relocate bus bays to surrounding streets while the first phase of construction is completed.
The entire project is designed to “make the area immediately surrounding the Metrorail station safer and more aesthetically pleasing for station users, while also maintaining efficient levels of service for buses and other transit vehicles accessing the site,” according to the City of Alexandria.
There will be no changes to train services in the immediate future. However, Metro will be shutting down all stations south of Reagan National Airport in the summer of 2019 for major track and platform work. (Read more about that here.)
In a Facebook post over the weekend, Alexandria’s Transportation & Environmental Services provided the following information:
Have you been wondering when the King St. station construction will begin? Wait no more! The King St. MetroRail Station Access Project (to improve safety and access in and around the King St. METRO station) originally slated to begin mid-Sept. is now beginning Nov. 18.
It will be a 2-phased project, with the first phase lasting 18 months. There will be no Kiss and Ride for the duration of the project. Additional changes include the relocation of bus bays to a number of surrounding streets as well as pedestrian changes as noted on the project website. The Trolley stop and METRO Access Van stops are relocated as well. Bike parking at the station will continue to be permitted and existing Bikeshare stations will remain open. We encourage those who use this station to monitor the webpage: alexandriava.gov/85338. This project will not impact train service or cause station closures.
