JP Morgan Chase might be considering opening a new bank branch at 628 King St., the former Banana Republic store in Old Town Alexandria.
Permit BLDC2023-00200 filed with the City of Alexandria at the end of March requests "Interior alterations to JP Morgan Chase Bank on the 1st floor, Suite #100" at that address. Other permits for that address indicate the second floor will be turned into office space.
JP Morgan Chase opened a new regional headquarters near McPherson Square in Washington, D.C. in 2022. With the opening, the bank announced it was "doubling its original branch network commitment made in 2018 to 140 branches by 2025 throughout Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia."
JP Morgan Chase has not verified the opening of a new branch at that location.
The filing of a permit does not mean that construction will proceed.
An earlier special use permit application for the property at 628 King St., now marked as 'void' in the city's permit database, indicates there were plans to open an ice cream shop there. SUP2022-00108 sought "interior tenant improvement of an existing building into an ice cream shop." The permit called for a new kitchen, guest area and restrooms, but those plans appear to have been canceled shortly after the paperwork was submitted in late 2022.
The GAP and Banana Republic closed in early 2022 as part of a nationwide reorganization.
