Vice Mayor Amy Jackson announced this weekend that she is running for mayor in Alexandria.
Her announcement came about a week after current Mayor Justin Wilson announced he would not seek re-election after serving two terms as Mayor and more than a decade on City Council.
Jackson has lived in Alexandria for more than 40 years, after moving to the area with her mother. She grew up in what is now Foxchase, and lives in the West End with her husband and sons.
"As your Mayor, I will continue to build on the accomplishments of prior councils, while concentrating on what matters most to our community, such as crime prevention; education programming and fair teacher compensation; improving our infrastructure with building/modernizing more schools; economic development opportunities (particularly growing our business community which will help alleviate the tax burden on our individual citizens); and striving to provide more affordable housing for our residents while maintaining the unique neighborhoods that make our city so culturally rich and aesthetically pleasing," Jackson wrote in her campaign launch letter.
Council member Alyia Gaskins is also running for mayor.
There will be a mayoral primary on June 18 (early voting starts May 3).
