Inova Health System, the City of Alexandria and Fairfax County are opening a new Northern Virginia large vaccination center here in Alexandria.
The site will be inside the Victory Center at 5001 Eisenhower Ave. An opening date will depend on how much vaccine is available — but when it opens, the center will be able to vaccinate between 6,000 and 12,000 people per day.
“The headline for today is partnership and capacity,” said Mayor Justin Wilson at a preview Tuesday.
The 50,000 square-foot vaccination center inside the Victory Center, which is now owned by Stonebridge, has more than enough parking — about 1,400 spaces in the east and west parking lots. There is storage, including deep freeze cold storage, for 400,000 vaccines.
The capacity for the center will be dictated by how many vaccines are distributed to Northern Virginia, something that has been a struggle. The Alexandria Health Department is receiving around 3,000 vaccines per week and Fairfax County is receiving just shy of 20,000 per week. Local leaders expect that to increase in the coming weeks.
The Virginia Dept. of Health in February launched a statewide COVID-19 vaccination registration system that lets residents register, get updates on their registration and more. Most of those who had registered through the Alexandria Health Department had their registration transferred.
Fairfax County is using its own vaccine registration dashboard, so Fairfax County residents can use the Fairfax County registration system to request a vaccine.
CVS in Northern Virginia is using its own registration system. Access the CVS system here.
Safeway grocery stores in select locations are also offering vaccines. Register through Safeway here.
Health officials are reminding residents that if they are registered in the state or Fairfax County system and get a vaccine through CVS or Safeway, remove yourself from the state or local list after your vaccination to make room for others.
