Inova Alexandria Hospital
Breaking ground on the new Inova Alexandria Hospital at WestEnd on Sept. 30, 2024.
Monday was a big day for INOVA in Alexandria, as officials broke ground on two new projects.
In the Franconia neighborhood early Monday afternoon, officials broke ground on the new Inova Franconia-Springfield Campus off of Beulah Street in Fairfax County. The project will link to the current HealthPlex there.
According to Inova, "The initial phase of the Franconia-Springfield project will include a state-of-the-art inpatient facility with 110 beds spread across two patient towers. The hospital will include private rooms, an expanded emergency room, diagnostic imaging, and multiple procedural rooms. An adjacent building will offer a variety of outpatient services, including ambulatory surgery, physician offices and procedural rooms."
The current Emergency Room in the HealthPlex will remain in place until emergency services can move to a larger space in the new hospital. The former ER space will be renovated for other community healthcare services after the move.
Later on Monday afternoon, in the new WestEnd section of the Landmark neighborhood, Inova broke ground on its new Alexandria Campus, which will include a hospital, cancer center, outpatient facilities and a trauma center.
“These new facilities represent a new physical identity that reflects Inova’s commitment to clinical excellence and compassionate care,” said Rina Bansal, MD, President, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “These buildings will seamlessly blend beauty with functionality, creating spaces that enhance the experience for our patients, visitors, and team members alike."
The project will also include medical office buildings on the 51-acre site that was once the home to Landmark Mall. Inova will anchor a whole new neighborhood with residential, retail, office space, parks and civic uses called WestEnd.
“Inova’s re-investment in the City of Alexandria is both substantial and transformative,” said City of Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson. “These projects will spur redevelopment and economic growth opportunities in the West End for the first time in decades. Alongside the world-class healthcare care for our residents, it’s truly a win on multiple fronts.”
When the project is completed around 2028, the current Alexandria Hospital on Jordan Street (built in 1962) will close and be replaced by residential development.
In addition, Inova's Oakville Triangle project will be opening in the coming weeks. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for Oct. 31 for the Inova Health Center - Oakville. The facility will include an emergency room, outpatient care center and medical offices. It is also part of a larger development that includes residential, retail and restaurants along the border of Del Ray and Potomac Yard in Alexandria.
