Representatives from JGB Smith, which is helping design the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, said they are working to make the North Potomac Yard neighborhood’s pump station attractive and interesting.
The pump station, the aesthetics of which have been a point of concern for area residents, will feature educational exhibits (in collaboration with Alexandria Renew Enterprises) and park-like features around the building.
Pump stations typically help circulate water through treatment systems and are a critical component of providing neighborhoods with clean water for daily use.
Unfortunately, often they aren’t particularly attractive buildings. JGB Smith presented concepts Wednesday night at a community virtual meeting on how the designers plan to make the pump station look… well, less like a pump station.
An adjacent walkway, native plantings, trellises, grass and other features will be placed around the building with the educational exhibits.
