Inova and Ballinger Architects & Engineering
Partial demolition could start as early as this spring at Landmark Mall to make room for construction of the new Inova Hospital and Trauma Center in the new West End development.
The hospital campus will take up about 10 acres where Sears was, or one-fifth of the Landmark Mall property. The rest of the development on the 51-acre site will include medical offices, residences, retail and civic uses.
Inova, developer Foulger-Pratt and architects Ballinger have released some initial design concepts for the hospital. The companies will host several community meetings before presenting anything close to a final design to City Council. The first parts of the hospital are expected to open in 2028.
Landmark Mall started its decline in the early 2000s, with the mall closing in sections before the COVID-19 pandemic. A portion of the mall was used to serve unhoused people while the Carpenter's Shelter in Old Town was rebuilt. The building was also used as the set of the movie "Wonder Woman 2."
Foulger-Pratt renamed the 51-acre site "West End." (Some residents claim this creates confusion, as the West End has been traditionally the name of a much larger portion of the City of Alexandria. In addition, the District already has its own West End neighborhood.)
Inova Health System is hosting a virtual community meeting on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at 6 p.m. to provide information about the development proposal. More information and registration for the virtual meeting is available at inova.org/landmark.
