In 2018, a portion of Holmes Run Trail closed due to flooding and erosion that undermined the stability of the trail and boardwalk.
Then, in 2019, additional flooding damaged three other sections of Holmes Run Trail, including two bridge structures.
Since those events, a half-mile section of the trail has been closed to pedestrians in Alexandria's West End.
Now, efforts to repair the trail are moving forward. The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities and the Department of Project Implementation will host a community meeting Wednesday, July 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.) to provide an update one the Holmes Run Bike & Pedestrian Trail Restoration Project.
Repairs are expected to start in September to three critical places along the trail — sections at Dora Kelly Park, Morgan Street and North Ripley Street. Further repairs will occur over the winter with final repairs complete in the first half of 2024.
