Both GAP and Banana Republic, the large clothing stores at the corner of King and Washington streets in Old Town, are closing in January.
Store closing signs are already up in the windows of both retailers.
The moves are part of a nationwide plan to close hundreds of GAP and Banana Republic stores — mostly stores that are inside malls where sales are declining, but some other stores that have been seen lackluster sales.
Gap, Inc., owns both stores in the historic buildings. GAP is at 622 King St. and Banana Republic is at 628 King St. The company also owns the Old Navy and Athleta brands.
Just across the street, Gap, Inc. is opening an Athleta store at 607 King St. The store was supposed to open this fall but construction delays have pushed the opening into this winter.
