Former Sen. John Warner, who served in Congress for decades, passed away Tuesday evening at his home in Alexandria, his former Chief of Staff Susan Magill announced early Wednesday.
His wife, Jeanne, and daughter, Virginia, were with him at the time. Warner was 94 and lived in Alexandria.
He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1927 and served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II and in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean war. He had a long career as a lawyer and served as Secretary of the Navy before he was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 1978 as a Republican. He served five terms in Congress before retiring in 2009.
Warner was married three times — to Catherine Mellon, actress Elizabeth Taylor and Jeanne Vander. He had three children — John Jr., Virginia and Mary. He has no relation to current Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.
