Do you want to see the Belle Haven Shopping Center redeveloped? Or more homes near Hilltop Village? Or a new urban town center and residences at Engleside?
Fairfax County officials are asking for input on those and 19 other proposals in front of them as part of the county’s South County Site-Specific Plan Amendment Process (SSPA).
In late 2019, a variety of businesses and individuals submitted ideas for site-specific land-use changes to the Fairfax County comprehensive plan. Now, SSPA District Task Forces are reviewing the submissions and will make recommendations to the County Planning Commission. From there, it’s possible that some of these projects could move forward and become reality.
All 22 projects are presented on an interactive map available here.
Residents may also track a specific nomination here, or read about all 22 in the SSPA “book” here.
Fairfax County has not scheduled meetings around all 22 projects yet, but there will be several ways for residents to offer feedback. In addition to attending online meetings, residents may send an email or video comment to their local district office (Lee District, Mason District or Mount Vernon District).
In the Alexandria area, some of the projects are massive in scale — for example, a project near the Huntington Metro calls for “public facilities with mixed use, including: office use at 250,000 sf, retail at 30,000 sf, residential use at 600 units, hotel use with 200 rooms or 250 additional dwelling units.” The project would cover close to 30 acres of land.
Others are significantly smaller — for example, a 5.3 acre residential development where the now-closed Mount Vernon Athletic Club sits.
Public hearings will start late this year on the projects and there will be more additional opportunities for feedback at that time.
