On Tuesday, Nov. 7, polling places will be open from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. for the general election.
All 140 spots in the General Assembly in Virginia (40 in the State Senate and 100 in the House of Delegates) are up for election Tuesday, Nov. 7.
There's one big change: Last year, the Virginia Supreme Court approved new districts for state government representation. This means changes in district numbers and boundaries for voters in the region.
Virginia State Senate Districts and Races
When the next state legislative session begins in 2024, the City of Alexandria will be represented in the 39th State Senate District. In the 39th District, incumbent Democrat Adam Ebbin is running against Republican Sophia Moshasha.
Much of the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County will switch to Senate District 34 (from 36). In the new 34th District, incumbent Democrat Scott Surovell is facing a challenge from Republican Mark Springman.
Virginia State House of Delegates Districts and Races
In addition, three members of the House of Delegates will represent Alexandria city and Alexandria-area Fairfax County residents in the redrawn 3rd, 4th, 5th, 16th and 17th districts.

Fairfax County Elections
Several Fairfax County offices are also up for election, including: Board of Supervisors chairman and members; School Board members; and sheriff.
Jeff McKay (D, incumbent) is facing Arthur Purves (R) for the chairman seat. McKay was supervisor of the Franconia District before being elected Chairman in 2019.
The following races directly affect people in the Alexandria area:
In the Franconia District (formerly Lee District), Rodney Lusk (D, incumbent) is facing challenges from both Paul Beran (R) and Mark T. Welch (I).
In the Mason District, Penny Gross is retiring. That leaves the seat open, and Andres Jimenez (D) and Terry Modglin (I) are running for the open seat.
In the Mount Vernon District, Dan Storck (D, incumbent) is facing challenges from Richard Hayden (R) and Christopher Morgan (I).
Fairfax County School Board
Two former School Board members are seeking to rejoin the organization — Ilryong Moon and Ryan McElveen. There are seven other candidates vying for the 3 available at-large seats on the school board and zero are incumbents.
In alphabetical order, they are:
Cassandra Aucoin, Maureen Brody, Saundra Davis, Peter Gabor, Ahmed Mahdi Hussein, Ilryong Moon, Ryan McElveen, Kyle McDaniel and Linda Ann Pellegrino.
In addition, Alexandria-area voters will choose from the following school board candidates by district:
In the Franconia District, Kevin Pinkney is running against Marcia St. John-Cunning.
In the Mason District Ricardy Anderson (incumbent) is running against challenger Kristin Froemling Ball.
In the Mount Vernon District, Mateo Dunne is running against Stori Zimmerman.
The school board is also asking voters to approve a $435 million bond referendum that will fund several school construction and renovation projects.
