On the ballot are:
Republican nominee Julie Robben Lineberry
(From Alexandria GOP): Republicans have nominated Julie Robben Lineberry, a local realtor and long-time community leader for the Feb. 10, 2026, Special Election in Virginia State Senate District 39. The seat currently is held by Adam Ebbin, who resigned effective Feb. 18 to take a position in Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s administration. The District includes all of the city of Alexandria as well as parts of Arlington and Fairfax County.
Lineberry knows the district well. She is a long-time Alexandria resident who, as a realtor, has been helping others find their homes in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax for more than 40 years. Her extensive community involvement includes the Girl Scouts (as a local troop leader and heading service units, associations, and trainer positions); TWIG (Inova Alexandria Hospital Auxiliary); and forming and leading neighborhood civic associations.
Lineberry served for 10 years on the Alexandria Electoral Board, working to ensure fair and honest elections. “I couldn’t sit back and let the high-jinx going on with this election go uncontested,” Lineberry said in announcing her candidacy. “It is time to draw the line. From gerrymandering to election manipulation, the political machine is undermining democracy for our citizens.”
Chris Howell, chairman of the Alexandria Republican City Committee as well as the 39th Legislative District Committee, said “Julie Lineberry gives voters the option to elect someone to the Senate who will represent all of us, not just the liberal fringe. She is a long-time member of our city and has served our community for over 40 years.”
“Lineberry is exactly the kind of candidate Republicans must recruit in Northern Virginia,” said Matthew Hurtt, Chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee. “She has deep ties to the community, an expansive understanding of the local economy through her experience in real estate, and a heart for civic and community service,” he added.
Democratic nominee Elizabeth Bennett-Parker
On Jan. 13, Delegate Elizabeth Bennett-Parker won the Democratic nomination for Senate of Virginia District 39 being vacated by Senator Adam Ebbin, who has been nominated to serve in Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger's administration. With the special election set for Feb. 10, 2026, Delegate Bennett-Parker will begin her general election campaign.
Democratic Party of Virginia Chairman, Senator Lamont Bagby, issued the following statement about the results:
“Delegate Elizabeth Bennett-Parker has already demonstrated through her work and leadership in the House of Delegates that she is deeply committed to serving Virginians and working to fix the kitchen table issues families face.
She has consistently championed issues like affordable housing, accessible childcare, public education, and common-sense gun safety. This makes her an outstanding choice to continue serving in the Senate, and I look forward to serving alongside her to build a more affordable, equitable, and prosperous Virginia.”
