The third round of public engagement for Duke Street In Motion ends this Sunday, April 30. Local officials are seeking comments on two updated concepts for the Duke Street corridor.
Residents can complete the feedback form or text “Hello Duke Street” or “Hola Duke Street” to 703.991.2899 to share your input by April 30.
The Alexandria City Council will consider the Duke Street in Motion recommendation in June for new bus lanes and facilities for walkers and bikers, while making an effort to keep Duke Street traffic flowing for drivers, too. The project's stated mission is: "This project will provide an efficient and desirable bus rapid transit (BRT) option along Duke Street by improving the transit experience for current and potential riders. With multimodal enhancements to the corridor, Duke Street will become a safe, efficient, and desirable community connector for people riding the bus, walking, biking, and driving."

Corridor Concept A calls for center-running bus lanes along Duke Street from Landmark to just east of Jordan Street, eastbound center-running bus lanes from just west of Quaker Lane to the King Street Metro station. Westbound center-running bus lanes would go from the King Street Metro station to Roth Street and again from Jordan to Landmark. In other areas, the bus would run in the normal traffic stream.
Corridor Concept B calls for curb-running bus lanes from Landmark to just east of Jordan Street, mixed traffic east until just past the Telegraph Road interchange and a center bus lane from there to the King Street Metro station. Westbound, buses would have a curb lane from Moncure to Roth streets, then mix with traffic toward Jordan Street where curb lanes would reappear.

For the sidewalks and curbs along Duke Street, there are also two concepts being considered: Concept Y calls for a mix of a shared-use path and a cycle track separated from the sidewalk. Concept Z calls for a mostly shared-use path along the corridor.

Feedback from this latest round will be posted on the project website and shared with the Duke Street In Motion Advisory Group. That group will be making a recommendation to the Alexandria City Council on May 25 on a preferred concept for the corridor, according to a city email that went to residents regarding the project.
