It's been a dual-issue for years: The on-ramp to Telegraph Road backs up past Yale Drive. And drivers use West Taylor Run as a cut-through to avoid backups on Quaker Lane during rush-hours.
Recent changes have resulted in improvements to the flow of traffic on Duke Street, including new signal timing with longer green lights on Duke Street, and the closure of left-turn access from West Taylor Run onto the Telegraph Road onramp.
City officials recently recommended making a pilot program phase permanent, as it has helped traffic flow faster along Duke Street, particularly during rush hour periods. The project also significantly reduced cut-through traffic on neighborhood roads like West Taylor Run and Yale Drive. While traffic increased in Quaker Lane, cars were able to move through that intersection more efficiently.
Now, the city is updating residents on the results of those programs and more changes that could be coming — including the Duke Street in Motion project.
The City will be hosting a hybrid (in-person/virtual) public meeting on Monday, April 17 at Bishop Ireton High School at 7 p.m. (To attend virtually, please register at https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_2Id6imbKS1mhOJRppLpCPg.)
According to the city officials:
"Staff will have a presentation that will cover the concepts for both the West Taylor Run intersection and the access point at Telegraph Road. The meeting will cover in more detail specific questions and comments from the November/December 2022 public outreach period about the right-turn lane, bike/pedestrian safety, and general access. Staff will also briefly cover some of the Duke Street In Motion Bus Rapid Transit Improvements for the Duke Street segment between Roth Street and Diagonal Street. The meeting will end with a question-and-answer section.
The Duke Street and West Taylor Run Project is focused on enhancing safety and access for people who walk, drive, bike and take transit at the intersection of West Taylor Run Parkway and Duke Street. It also includes providing new access onto Telegraph Road east of the West Taylor Run intersection. In conjunction with this project, the City has recently completed documenting results of the Duke Street Mitigation Pilot Phase II and recommended extending the pilot permanently."
