A proposal for redevelopment of the Belle View Shopping Center submitted as part of the South County Site-Specific Plan Amendment Process.
One developer is proposing putting 900 apartments where the Belle View Shopping Center — recently ravaged by a fire — now stands. Another developer is thinking about redeveloping the Beacon Hill Apartments.
The proposals are among those submitted to Fairfax County officials as part of the South County Site-Specific Plan Amendment Process, which lets individuals and businesses make suggestions to change the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan.
The nomination period for the South County SSPA was from October through December, and Fairfax County posted the nominations online in January.
Covering the Corridor summarized the most ambitious projects for the Richmond Highway area in Southeast Fairfax County, including the following and several others:
- Beacon Hill Apartments
- Mount Vernon Tennis, Gym and Athletic Club
- Engleside Trailer Park/Ray’s Mobile Home Colony
- 8160-8208 Mount Vernon Highway
- Belle View Shopping Center
In all, there were 26 proposals (also called nominations) submitted and 22 accepted across southern Fairfax County.
Some of the nominations caught residents off-guard and drew concerns about traffic and density in particular, including the redevelopment of Belle View Shopping Center, according to Covering the Corridor. The next steps for any of the proposals is to go through an extensive review, including community input, and then the proposals that make it past review would have to go through all the normal County processes, including any needed rezoning.
