Democratic City Council Member Kirk McPike won the Jan. 20 "firehouse" primary in Alexandria in a bid to represent the City in the House of Delegates.
The two are vying for the spot vacated by Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker, who won the Democratic "firehouse" primary for the Senate District 39 seat vacated by Sen. Adam Ebbin, who is joining the Gov. Abigail Spanberger administration.
No word on who might run for McPike's City Council seat.
McPike was declared winner in the Democratic firehouse primary, earning 60.5% of the vote among three other Democrats on the ballot. In all, Alexandria saw 2,115 voters participate in the primary.
McPike and his husband, Cantor Jason Kaufman, live in Alexandria’s Seminary Hill neighborhood with their beagle, Jenny. Kirk has lived here for 15 years.
In addition to serving on the City Council, Kirk has been the chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), a leading progressive voice in Congress, for more than 13 years.
McPike will now face Republican Mason Butler in the Feb. 10 special election. Alexandria Republicans selected Butler as their candidate. Butler was the only candidate to apply for selection by the party. He previously ran as an independent candidate for Alexandria City Council in 2024.
