Rain, freezing temperatures, blazing sun — Cora Reed has stood outside in all of it to help students get to school safely. Now, the state of Virginia is honoring her for nearly 50 years of service.
Virginia's Most Outstanding Crossing Guard program is honoring Alexandria City Public Schools' Cora Reed. Reed is currently a crossing guard at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy. She has been recognized by the Virginia Safe Routes to Schools program (VA SRTS).
At 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday, school officials, PTA leadership and representatives from the Alexandria City Police Department (APD), Alexandria City Public Schools-Safe Routes to School (ACPS-SRTS), ACPS Community Partners Alexandria families for Safe Streets (AFSS) and Alexandria's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC), will celebrate the recognition.
Families who nominated Reed for the honor said has been an integral part of the school community and is vital to drop-off and pick-up. She has a positive and encouraging attitude, and teaches students safe pedestrian behaviors.
The Alexandria Police Department (APD) employs 18 crossing guards that are stationed across school locations. In addition to Reed, ACPS will thank and celebrate the dedication and hard work of all crossing guards by presenting them with care packages Wednesday.
