More transportation options may be coming to the Mount Vernon district in Southeast Fairfax County.
Capital Bikeshare, the regional bicycle-sharing system, is considering adding multiple stations south of the Beltway this year.
Thursday, Jan. 18, the Fairfax County Dept. of Transportation will host a community meeting to discuss the expansion proposals.
Capital Bikeshare has more than 4,300 bikes available at more than 700 stations in the District, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Falls Church and in Maryland in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.
Back in 2008, the District of Columbia that became the first city in North America to launch a bike sharing system, called SmartBike DC. Arlington was working on similar plans around the same time, and the collaboration eventually led to Capital Bikeshare. Capital Bikeshare arrived in the City of Alexandria in 2012.
Proposed station in the Mount Vernon district include:
- Huntington Avenue and Metroview Parkway
- Huntington Avenue and Farrington Avenue
- Huntington Avenue and Old Richmond Highway
- Huntington Metro North
- Huntington Metro South
- Belle View Boulevard and 10th Street
- Belle View Boulevard and 13th Street
- Wakefield Drive and Potomac Avenue
- Mt Vernon Trail and Belle Haven Park
- Mt Vernon Trail and Riverside Park
- Mt Vernon Trail and Mount Vernon Estate
- Fort Hunt Park
