Capital Bikeshare will be installing several new docks in Alexandria's West End in early 2021, according to the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
Specific dates aren’t available yet, but these bike-sharing stations will be opening early in the new year:
1. Whiting St. at Lane Drive
2. Taney Ave. at N Jordan St.
3. North Hampton Dr. at Ford Ave.
4. Southern Towers
5. Bradlee Shopping Center
6. Virginia Theological Seminary
7. Library Lane at Seminary Road
Capital Bikeshare is also planning to expand to at least a dozen more locations in 2021 in the City of Alexandria. Until this expansion, there were just two Capital Bikeshare docks west of Quaker Lane in Alexandria — at Port City Brewing Co. and at the intersection of Beauregard and Berkley Streets.
There are more than 4,300 bikes available at more than 500 stations in the District
Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Falls Church and in Maryland in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties.
Back in 2008, it was the District of Columbia that became the first city in North America to launch a bike sharing system, called SmartBike DC. Arlington was working on similar plans around the same time, and the collaboration eventually led to Capital Bikeshare. Capital Bikeshare arrived in Alexandria in 2012.
There are more than two dozen Capital Bikeshare stations in the City of Alexandria now. Fairfax County locations include Merrified, Tysons and Reston, but there are no Capital Bikeshare docks in Southeast Fairfax County.
