This is part of a series of stories updating the status of various development projects in and around Alexandria.
In Arlandria, Sansé and Naja, the two planned affordable housing buildings at the intersection of West Glebe Road and Mount Vernon Avenue, are under construction now.
Construction is on track and the first building will open to residents in 2026.
The project will include 474 units of affordable housing in addition to 36,000 SF of retail and an underground garage. More than 100 of the units will be “deeply affordable” — attainable for those making 40% of the area median income (AMI).
"Sansé and Naja will be an innovative, mixed-use residential and commercial development designed to address the growing need for committed affordable housing in the neighborhood," according to Housing Alexandria. "This new community includes a total of 474 affordable homes, over 100 of which will be available at the deeply affordable 40% Area Median Income threshold, ensuring future affordability for residents who have long been an integral part of this vibrant neighborhood."
The names of the buildings came from community input. According to Housing Alexandria,
The names Sansé and Naja are Nahuat, a language native to El Salvador. Sansé is the larger building, and the word means "unique" or "only one." Naja means "me" or "myself". Together, the names build an image of individuals coming together to create a unique community.
