The City of Alexandria will host a remembrance ceremony on Thursday, September 11, at City Hall from 10 to 11 a.m., to honor those who sacrificed and were lost on that day 24 years ago.
On Sept. 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon, six miles from Alexandria, killing all 64 people on the plane and 125 people in the Pentagon. The Pentagon Memorial is the first national memorial dedicated to honoring the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon that day, their families, and all those who sacrifice so that we may live in freedom. Additional attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, and Shanksville, Pa. killed more victims and 2,977 died in all.
The Alexandria ceremony at 301 King St. on Thursday will remember those killed, those who survived and all who were affected. The event will also show gratitude to those who risked or gave their lives while responding to the incident to save others.
Join City officials and staff for a presentation of colors, remarks by Mayor Alyia Gaskins and public safety officials, and a return to quarters ceremony.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in City Hall.
