A special election has been called for April 21 in Alexandria. Contests include a City Council Special Election (the Order for the Special Election is available here) and a Statewide Proposed Constitutional Amendment (information available here).

Important Dates for the April 21 Special Election:
- Early voting: Friday, March 6 through Saturday, April 18, 2026. Additional information is available here and on the City Early Voting page.
- Last day to register to vote or update existing registration: Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
- Same day registration begins: Once the deadline to register or update existing registration has passed.
- Last day to apply for a by-mail ballot: 5 p.m. on Friday, April 10.
- Election Day: Tuesday, April 21, 2026 (polls open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
- Mail ballots returned by mail must be: Postmarked on or before April 21, 2026, and received by 12 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2026.

How Do I Register to Vote?
The voter registration deadline for general and primary elections is 11 days before the election. Registration applications received after this deadline will be processed after the election. You may submit or update your registration information online through the Virginia Department of Elections, vote.elections.virginia.gov. Any eligible U.S. citizen who will be 18 years old by the next general election are eligible to register.

How Do I Vote Absentee?
In-Person Absentee. In-Person absentee voting begins 45 days prior to a primary or general election in the Alexandria Voter Registration Office, 132 North Royal St.
- The absentee voting page will include additional information on in-person absentee voting including satellite voting locations, weekend and evening hours.
- The deadline to vote in-person absentee is 5 p.m. on the Saturday before the election.
By-Mail. If you would like to receive a ballot by mail, you may apply online, vote.elections.virginia.gov or download a paper application from our absentee page (see below).

- The deadline to apply for a by mail ballot is 5 p.m. on the 11th day before an election.
