For anyone still haunted by memories of last year’s muggy summer, 2019 may be a chance to look on the brighter — or, at least, the drier — side. After months of cloudy days and rainfall, meteorologists say warm temperatures and lower humidity levels lie ahead for the Washington, D.C. area.
This doesn’t mean Alexandria residents should be putting away their umbrellas just yet. While there is plenty of sunshine on the calendar, the National Weather Service’s May-June-July temperature outlook shows above-normal levels of precipitation for the southern east coast, including the mid-Atlantic region.
Fortunately, Doug Kammerer of Storm Team 4 (NBC Washington) reported that those in D.C. area should not expect last summer’s same high frequency of flash flood warnings. Kammerer predicts this season’s summer storms to be on the weaker side. However, afternoon storms, flooding and other cases of severe weather are still possible. It’s important to stay prepared for dramatic changes to the weather, even on sunny days.
The Farmer’s Almanac predicts a relatively cool June, with an average temperature of 70 degrees and 3 inches of precipitation. Those planning a beach vacation should keep in mind that the first and fourth weeks of the month are supposed to be the sunniest. Thunderstorms and showers may be on the horizon between the 9th and the 24th of June.
Expect rainy days be scattered throughout July and August. While most hurricanes and large storms are expected to stay out at sea, Kammerer told WTOP that the first and second weeks of August could see a larger storm. This would most likely affect beaches, such as Ocean and Rehoboth.
Temperatures are also expected to rise in July, with highs in the early nineties, according to AccuWeather. The warm streak will continue through August. Storm Team 4 predicts 48 to 53 days with temperatures of 90 degrees or above. Heat waves are a definite possibility, but temperatures in the three-digit range will be rare.
