Fans of Amazon Fresh in Alexandria will soon be shopping elsewhere. The company announced Tuesday that they plan to close all physical stores across the country as of Feb. 1.
The company said it wants to concentrate on same-day delivery from Whole Foods Market, which it owns.
“After a careful evaluation of the business and how we can best serve customers, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores, converting various locations into Whole Foods Market stores,” the company wrote in a blog post.
The company said it expects to open more than 100 new Whole Foods locations over the next few years but details on locations were not available.
The Amazon Fresh store at Potomac Yard in Alexandria opened July 25, 2024. The store, at 3801 Richmond Hwy., took the place of the Shoppers food store, which closed in early 2020. Amazon fresh announced later that year that it had plans to open there, but those plans went on pause in 2023 as Amazon retooled the format and product mix of Amazon Fresh Stores, and reconsidered some of its real estate deals.
This is not Amazon's only grocery store in the Alexandria area. An Amazon Fresh store opened at Manchester Lakes near Franconia in 2021. The Franconia store was the first Amazon Fresh in the D.C. area, opening in May 2021. That grocery store took the place of the Shoppers grocery store that closed.
