Firefighters will be standing on street corners in Alexandria and Fairfax County this month (between calls for service) asking for your spare change.
No, the spare change drive is not for a new firetruck. It's the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) “Fill the Boot” Campaign.
Every boot drive helps families with muscular dystrophy by funding research for new treatments, supporting MDA Care Centers, and sending kids to MDA Summer Camp.
"Over time, muscle weakness decreases mobility, making everyday tasks difficult. There are many kinds of muscular dystrophy, each affecting specific muscle groups, with signs and symptoms appearing at different ages, and varying in severity," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Last year, Fairfax County (one of the largest fire departments in the country) raised the most money of all participating jurisdictions nationwide at more than $272,000.
