Alexandria will be the site of a protest on Saturday, June 14, organized by the Alexandria Democratic Committee. Dubbed the "No Kings in Alexandria Rally," the protest is set for 3-5 p.m. at 300 King St. in Market Square.
Local Democratic leaders are expected to attend.
The protest is one of hundreds planned for Saturday across the country to counter the military parade planned the same day in Washington, D.C.
Here's what the Alexandria Democrats had to say, posted on their Facebook page:
"You can have two opinions at once, and here’s an example:
We support the Army – this is Alexandria, the home of George Washington, the ultimate military leader, after all! Many of us have served or have family members who have or are in the Army. We honor military service. On June 14th, we’ll celebrate the Army’s 250th birthday.
BUT.
We don’t curtsy to royalty. We are anti-throne. We don’t do crowns. And we’re not pleased at efforts to tear down our institutions, one executive order at a time. We don’t support million-dollar military parades to bolster egomaniac birthday boys.
So, you’ll see us calling for No Kings at a rally in Old Town. Along with Indivisible, a network of activists working to advance progressive policies and build a more inclusive democracy, we’ll be there and hope you will be, too."
