The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce has released its 2026 Legislative Agenda—their most important advocacy document of the year.
Crafted by their members, the agenda reflects a collective voice and priorities of Alexandria’s business community and outlines how they plan to advocate on the business community's behalf in the year ahead and beyond.
Highlights
Strengthening Economic Resilience Through Strategic Development
- Alexandria must diversify and grow its commercial tax base to ensure long-term prosperity.
- We’re advocating for timely advancement of major development projects.
- The Chamber will work closely with partners like the City and Alexandria Economic Development Partnership (AEDP) to implement smart, long-range strategies, especially in areas like Potomac Yard and repurposing underused office space.
Investing in a Ready, Skilled Workforce
- To support Alexandria’s future economy, the Chamber is championing a comprehensive Workforce Development Strategy that prepares residents for the jobs of today and tomorrow—including those impacted by AI and tech.
- This includes stronger career readiness in schools and reskilling for displaced workers (especially former federal employees).
Making Alexandria More Business-Friendly
- We’re calling for streamlined permitting, zoning, and licensing processes to reduce delays and eliminate unnecessary barriers for small businesses.
- The Chamber wants to be a true partner with the City—providing input on website resources, and ensuring that entrepreneurs can easily navigate the system and succeed.
Supporting Quality of Life for a Thriving Workforce
- Issues like housing affordability, childcare and transportation access are workforce issues—AND they’re business issues.
- The Chamber is advocating for more housing options across income levels, investments in affordable and accessible childcare, and reliable multimodal transportation that works for all Alexandrians, including during nontraditional work hours.
