If there's a bill from the City of Alexandria in your mail stack, don't let it get buried. The city has mailed 2026 personal property tax bills for vehicles and businesses, and payment is due Monday, Oct. 5.
Missing the deadline gets expensive fast. Payments up to 30 days late carry a 10% penalty, plus interest. After Nov. 4, the penalty goes up to 25%.
The good news is that you have plenty of ways to pay, and most of them don't require leaving the house.
Pay online
The quickest option is online at alexandriava.gov/Payments, for both vehicle and business personal property taxes.
Pay by mail
Vehicle and business taxes go to different P.O. boxes, so check the address before you seal the envelope. The city says payment must be received by Oct. 5, so give the mail a few days.
- Vehicle personal property tax: City of Alexandria, P.O. Box 34710, Alexandria, VA 22334-0710
- Business personal property tax: City of Alexandria, P.O. Box 34901, Alexandria, VA 22334-0901
Pay in person (not at City Hall)
City Hall at Market Square is closed for renovation, so in-person payments are going to the West End. You can pay at the city's Finance Office, 4850 Mark Center Drive, Suite 2011, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Use the drop box, even at 11:59 p.m.
If you're a last-minute person, the drop box at 100 N. Pitt St. takes payments 24 hours a day. It accepts checks and money orders only. Your payment counts as on time if it's in the box by midnight on Oct. 5.
Where's my parking permit?
It wasn't in the envelope with your tax bill. The city mailed 2026 residential parking permits separately, and all of them had gone out by Sept. 4. They went to vehicles currently registered with the city that qualify for permits. The new permits are good through Nov. 15, 2027.
