Alexandria City Public Schools will be installing speed cameras near four schools — three of them in the West End.
Virginia made it legal for municipalities to install speed cameras in school and work zones in 2020 and other jurisdictions, including Arlington and Fairfax counties, have implemented speed camera programs.
"Speed cameras are a proven safety countermeasure that can reduce the number of crashes by more than 50%, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT). They can also free up police officers to handle other duties citywide," according to city officials.
- Francis Hammond Middle School on Seminary Road, between Kenmore Avenue and North Jordan Street
- John Adams Elementary School and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School on North Beauregard Street, between North Highview Lane and Reading Avenue
- George Washington Middle School on Mount Vernon Avenue, between Braddock Road and Luray Avenue.
The schools did not say whether the speed cameras would be operational in both directions on those roadways.
Fairfax County officials deployed a school zone speed camera program earlier this year at one school in each district. The schools closes to the Alexandria region are:
- Key Middle School: Franconia Road near the school (Franconia District)
- Sleepy Hollow Elementary School: Sleepy Hollow Road near the school (Mason District)
- South County Middle School: Silverbrook Road near the school (Mt. Vernon District)
