Plans are moving forward on making Richmond Highway in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County both wider and safer for all users.
Covering the Corridor reported a design public hearing is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on March 26 at Mount Vernon High School for residents to receive more information and provide input.
The widening and safety initiative has been in the works for years, pushing Richmond Highway toward a more "transit-oriented design" and making it friendlier for pedestrians and even bicyclists.

While bus rapid transit is not part of this initial design phase, Fairfax County officials report that VDOT (the Virginia Department of Transportation) and Fairfax County are coordinating closely as each project moves forward.
In the long-term, the highway will be redesigned around community business centers connected by bus rapid transit. Dedicated bike lanes, multiple improvements to intersections to reduce congestion and backups and better lighting are all in the works.
