Ryan McElveen and Ilryong Moon will be rejoining the Fairfax County School Board.
The two former School Board members sought to rejoin the organization after serving previously. McElveen served from January 2012 to December 2019 as an at-large member of the school board. During his time away, he founded Global Leaders of Fairfax County, "which prepares county high school seniors to be global citizens and change agents in their community and the world," according to his campaign website.
Ilryong Moon will also rejoin the school board after having previously served for 20 years in the Braddock District and as an at-large member.
There were seven other candidates vying for the three available at-large seats on the school board, and none were incumbents. Kyle McDaniel won the third seat. McDaniel is a flight school owner and Herndon resident. He ran "to ensure all kids have access to a high-quality education that promotes excellence and embraces equality, in a safe and welcoming environment," according to his campaign website.
In alphabetical order, the other candidates for at-large seats were: Cassandra Aucoin, Maureen Brody, Saundra Davis, Peter Gabor, Ahmed Mahdi Hussein and Linda Ann Pellegrino.
In addition, Alexandria-area voters chose from the following school board candidates by district:
In the Franconia District, Marcia St. John-Cunning defeated Kevin Pinkney. In the Mason District, Ricardy Anderson (incumbent) defeated challenger Kristin Froemling Ball. In the Mount Vernon District, Mateo Dunne defeated Stori Zimmerman.
The school board is also asked voters to approve a $435 million bond referendum that will fund several school construction and renovation projects.
