City of Alexandria
Write as Rain messages are appearing this summer in Alexandria.
Next time it rains, look down at the sidewalk!
Alexandria is participating in the first ever “Write as Rain” campaign. When it rains, hidden messages will appear on sidewalks and streets. The messages are meant to encourage residents to think about clean water.
The campaign is a regional effort by the Northern Virginia Clean Water Partners. NVCWP participants “have a shared goal to work together to keep residents healthy and safe by reducing pollution that reaches local creeks and rivers,” according to the Northern Virginia Regional Commission.
Participants of the CWP program include governments, schools, independent water and sanitary sewer authorities, businesses, the Northern Virginia Regional Commission and the Virginia Coastal Zone Management Program.
“During rainstorms, storm drains are meant to carry rainwater away from the streets quickly. However, rainwater can collect other materials such as trash, pet waste, chemicals, and lawn debris along the way,” the Alexandria Transportation and Environmental Services website explains.
The City of Alexandria is encouraging residents to follow @AlexandriaVATES on Twitter and share photos of the hidden messages using #OnlyRain.
