When the August humidity settles in, Alexandria offers no shortage of ways to cool down — from lap pools and family-friendly wading spots to free spray fountains and shaded nature preserves where the temperature seems to drop the moment you step under the canopy. With the warmest weeks of the year still upon us, here's your guide to staying cool, whatever kind of relief you're after.
Take a dip: the city's outdoor pools
Alexandria runs a handful of seasonal outdoor pools; a few standouts below, with the full roster and current hours on the city's site.
1609 Cameron St.
The family favorite: an eight-lane lap pool with a diving well, a shallow training pool, a tot playground, and a picnic area — enough to make an afternoon of it.
Memorial Pool at Charles Houston
901 Wythe St.
A beach-style, zero-depth entry and built-in spray features make this the gentlest option for little ones just getting comfortable in the water.
3301 Landover St.
A six-lane pool with an accessible ramp entry and a gradual zero-to-five-foot depth — a solid neighborhood spot for a swim.
Great Waves Waterpark at Cameron Run
4001 Eisenhower Ave.
For a full day of splashing, this regional waterpark brings slides, a wave pool, and mini golf — the closest thing to a beach day without leaving town.
For the complete list of city pools — including Chinquapin's aquatics facility — plus hours, fees, and season-pass details, see the City of Alexandria aquatics page. (Our own guide to where to go swimming this summer has more, too.)
Splash & spray: free fun for kids
No pool pass required — just bring a towel.
Potomac Yard Park Interactive Fountain
2501 Potomac Ave.
Three dozen water jets — including laminar arcs and nighttime lighting — make this free fountain a magnet for kids on a hot day. Easy, breezy, and no admission.
Our Special Harbor Sprayground
Lee District Park, 6601 Telegraph Road
A fully accessible, Chesapeake Bay-themed splash pad designed so children of all abilities can play together (water shoes required). One of the most inclusive water-play spots in the region.
Shady retreats: cool without the water
Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is a deep patch of shade and a slower pace.
Near the Mark Center, West End
A 44-acre pocket of forest, streams, and a small waterfall hidden in the middle of the city — shaded trails that feel a world away from the pavement and several degrees cooler for it.
4603 Green Spring Road
Demonstration gardens, wooded paths, and a historic house make this a leafy, restful escape — lovely for a shaded stroll when the sun is at its worst.
3701 Lockheed Blvd.
A shaded boardwalk winds through wetland and forest at this wildlife haven just south of the city — bring binoculars and let the tree canopy do the cooling.
A few things to know
The city's outdoor pools run on a seasonal calendar and can fill up on the hottest days, so check hours and pass options before you head over. The free spray spots are first-come, first-served and popular with families, and the shaded preserves are at their best early in the day. However you cool off, there's still summer left to enjoy — go find some shade or a splash while it lasts.
