If you're looking for a relaxing getaway this fall (and you're a fan of history and architecture) you might consider the iconic Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix. The celebrated resort, often referred to as "The Jewel of the Desert," is marking its 95th year in 2024.
The 703-room resort was conceived by Albert Chase McArthur, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose architectural influence is evident throughout the property.
After a recent stay, we have a tip: You don’t have to leave the property if you’re coming for a relaxing weekend stay. The Arizona Biltmore offers layers of intrigue between its Old Hollywood history and the Wright-inspired design. You’ll have access to seven swimming pools, two golf courses, luxe amenities, six dining options and an ever-present view of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.
Luxury hotels can sometimes miss the mark on one detail or another, but during our stay, the Arizona Biltmore would have pleased our pickiest loved ones. It really checks off all of the boxes – from the top-notch service, relaxing ambiance and tasty cuisine.
Where to Stay: The Newly Renovated Cottages
The hotel offers standard rooms, small cottages and villas. We enjoyed a stay in one of their newly renovated cottages on the property. With updated desert-style decor, the cottages are equipped with patio spaces featuring fire pits, floor to ceiling windows and an overall sense of coziness and privacy that might please those who are typically inclined to book an Airbnb.
The attention to detail in a recent restoration has preserved the unique character of the Biltmore while elevating the guest experience with modern amenities like a spacious walk-in shower, a TV with streaming services and a Nespresso tucked into a designated coffee bar.
What to Explore: History, Architecture
The Biltmore's distinctive style features geometric patterns, earthy tones and the innovative use of concrete blocks, known as "Biltmore Blocks," that capture the essence of the surrounding desert landscape. The resort has been a haven for Hollywood stars, presidents and dignitaries, making it a living testament to Arizona’s glamorous past. And here's a bit of history: The Tequila Sunrise cocktail was invented at the hotel at The Wright Bar in the 1930s.
What Surprised Us: Dining at The Citrus Club
The Citrus Club is the Arizona Biltmore’s all-inclusive option. The club features several rooms and an outdoor patio exclusive to Citrus Club members and features all-day dining and a full bar. It is a great pit stop for cocktails en route to dinner at Renata’s Hearth, their upscale Latin-inspired restaurant on the property. If you’re checking into the hotel for a longer stay, we recommend this option. This is a great place to grab a quick bite – there’s a fresh and varied buffet available to guests all day.
Where to Celebrate: Renata's Hearth
Visiting for an anniversary or a birthday? Renata's Hearth, the resort's signature restaurant, is exactly where you want to be when you’re looking for an impressive vacation dining experience. The decor is upscale and rustic, reflecting the impressive Latin-inspired menu. Our waiter greeted us upon arrival with chips and guacamole, the ceviche was a stand out and the meal ended with an impressive Wagyu strip steak.
The Verdict: The Best of Southwestern Luxury
The Arizona Biltmore offers a seamless blend of historical grandeur and contemporary luxury, making it an ideal destination for a girlfriends' getaway or any special occasion. From the iconic architecture to the unique cottages, we count this resort as a true luxury oasis in the desert. The dining options, particularly at The Citrus Club and Renata's Hearth, add to the resort's thoughtfulness, offering guests a chance to indulge in exceptional classic resort amenities while also catering to the more casual modern traveler. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie or simply in need of a luxurious escape, the Arizona Biltmore will give you a reason to travel West.
