The Tall Ship Providence will be operating out of The Wharf in the District for its 2022 cruise season, returning only for select events in Alexandria this summer.
The ship's organization, the Tall Ship Providence Foundation, is planning to build a permanent home for the ship at a new Senator John Warner Maritime Heritage Center continues in Old Town Alexandria. The Senator John Warner Maritime Heritage Center will at Old Town Alexandria’s Waterfront Park near King Street, providing the ship with a permanent home port and an interactive experience for visitors.
The Tall Ship Providence opened to visitors in July 2020 and has served as a floating classroom focused on the role of the Continental Navy, and the original Providence under the command of John Paul Jones, in the American Revolution.
“Providence’s visit to The Wharf gives us the opportunity to increase the awareness of the ship and the newMaritime Heritage Center to different audiences while generating ticket sales in a high foot traffic area,” said Clair S. Sassin, president and CEO of the Tall Ship Providence Foundation. ”Our goal was to keep Providence in the DMV for the 2022 season and we are delighted to be working with the team from The Wharf.”
