Handmade by artisans featured in The Washington Post and donated along with locally grown blooms from Del Ray's Grangel Farm, the Pysanky eggs make stunning host gifts, centerpieces, and seasonal decor with meaning. The Pysanky eggs are one-of-a-kind keepsakes that link to generations of history, tradition and faith.
About Pysanky
Pysanky (pronounced PIH-san-kih - singular form is pysanka) are Ukrainian Easter Eggs, elaborately decorated in the batik (wax-resist) method. This art has been passed down through generations of Ukrainians and are traditionally made during Lent to be given as gifts to friends and family.
Legend says that there is a monster that represents all evil chained to a cliff, and how tight those chains hold it is entirely dependent on how many pysanky are made each year. The more made, the tighter the chains hold evil at bay. Too few, and the chains loosen to let evil roam.
About Razom for Ukraine
Razom was born out of the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 when millions of people worked together and risked their lives to build a pathway to a better future for Ukraine. Some of these leaders decided to form an organization that could help sustain momentum and propel forward the important work started on the Maidan. They named it Razom, which means “together” in Ukrainian and serves as a constant reminder of the community that it takes to create, build and do, to stay the path towards a more prosperous and democratic Ukraine.
Alexandria residents may purchase an egg through Made in ALX. All proceeds will go to Razom for Ukraine and purchased eggs may be picked up at ALX Community, 201 N. Union St., Suite 110, in Old Town Alexandria through Friday afternoon.
