City Cruises, operator of the Potomac Water Taxi, has announced that beginning August 3, guests visiting George Washington’s Mount Vernon will now travel aboard the Potomac Water Taxi, offering a faster journey to the historic estate and, for the first time, convenient departures from both The Wharf in D.C. and Old Town Alexandria in Northern Virginia.
City Cruises provides the only round-trip cruises to Mount Vernon direct from Washington, D.C., and now, the enhanced service will also provide Northern Virginia residents with a new opportunity to experience one of the nation’s most iconic historic landmarks directly from Alexandria’s waterfront. Tickets include round-trip transportation aboard the Potomac Water Taxi and admission to Mount Vernon.
“By transitioning our Mount Vernon route to the Potomac Water Taxi, we’re able to provide guests with a faster, more convenient experience while expanding access with departures from both Washington, D.C. and now Alexandria too,” said Chad Barth, Vice President, Mid-Atlantic Region, City Cruises. “Traveling to Mount Vernon by water offers a unique perspective of the Potomac River, allowing guests to arrive at George Washington’s estate as he once did.”
Beginning August 3, the daily schedule will be:
- Washington, D.C. Departure from The Wharf: Boarding at 8:15 a.m.; departs at 8:30 a.m.; arrives in Alexandria at approximately 8:55 a.m.
- Alexandria Departure: Boarding at 9 a.m.; departs at 9:05 a.m.; arrives at Mount Vernon at approximately 9:45 a.m.
- Return Trip: Boarding at Mount Vernon at 1:45 p.m.; departs at 2 p.m.; arrives in Alexandria at approximately 2:40 p.m.; continues to The Wharf, arriving at approximately 3:10 p.m.
Mount Vernon recently completed an ambitious $40 million revitalization project, ensuring that the estate is preserved with authenticity for years to come. Visitors can now explore the Mansion’s first- and second-floor rooms for the first time in two years, learn about the people who lived and work there, and see the place that Washington cherished the most. Guests can also experience the brand-new education center in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, George Washington: A Revolutionary Life.
The new route enhances City Cruises’ existing Potomac Water Taxi network, connecting guests to some of the region’s most popular waterfront destinations while offering a scenic and memorable way to experience the nation’s history.
