Port City Brewing Company has earned a gold and bronze medal at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival (GABF®) competition, hosted and presented by the Brewers Association.
In the 2024 competition, beers and ciders spanning 107 categories and 175 different styles (including all subcategories) were judged meticulously by 285 judges over seven days. Awards presented during the Great American Beer Festival competition are considered coveted symbols of brewing excellence globally, and brews that receive an award are considered the most excellent representation of their style category.
Port City was recognized in the Robust Porter beer-style category for its Port City Porter, a smooth and silky beer, pouring dark mahogany in color with a firm cap of tan foam. This robust Porter has bittersweet chocolate and coffee notes, and a depth that bigger beers aspire to.
Port City was also recognized in the Smoked Lager beer-style category for its Rauchbier, a traditional Bamberg-style smoked Märzen lager brewed with all Bavarian malt and hops. Rauchbier is brilliant copper in color and showcases toasty German malt character, including traditional beechwood-smoked malts that impart an appetizing, savory smokiness.
Port City is a 30-barrel brewery located in Alexandria that prides itself in being a reliable and innovative brewer of delicious, well-balanced beers that celebrate their raw ingredients. As the longest operating brewery in metropolitan Washington, D.C., Port City offers a lineup of year-round beers, as well as an exciting slate of seasonal, occasional, and specialty beers, each with a unique twist.
“Our team has shown once again that we are brewing some of the best quality beers in the United States,” said Bill Butcher, founder of Port City Brewing. “Our Porter has long been recognized locally as an outstanding, delicious dark beer. The Gold Medal shows the rest of the country how special it is. I couldn’t be more proud of our team for this recognition!”
Thanks to a panel of 285 professional judges from around the world and over 250 volunteers, the Great American Beer Festival competition analyzed 9,216 entries over two phases and 7 days. The 2024 competition saw entries from 1869 breweries and cideries from all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
“The Great American Beer Festival competition recognizes greatness in innovation and craftsmanship from brewers all over the country, and the Brewers Association takes great pride in crowning one winner from each category as ‘Best in Class,’” remarked Chris Williams, competition director for the Brewers Association. “This year’s competition was especially notable with the introduction of five new cider categories. This expansion not only increased the competition’s scope but also highlights producers’ relentless pursuit of creativity and excellence. The Brewers Association is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of this year's winners.”
The 2024 medals were unveiled during an intimate ceremony held at the Bellco Theatre in Denver on Saturday, Oct. 12, as part of the Great American Beer Festival. The ceremony was live streamed via The Brewing Network.
