Alexandria City High School grad Noah Lyles set a new American record in the men's 200m.
Lyles broke the 26-year-old record by .01 seconds when he won the men's 200-meter final at the 2002 World Athletic Championships Thursday in Eugene, Oregon. The record had been held by Michael Jordan, who ran the 200m in 19.32 seconds in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200m with a time of 19.74, in the 2020 Olympic Summer Games in Toyko, Japan, which took place in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Later in 2021, Lyles returned to Alexandria to talk about his ongoing struggles with his mental health and the importance of seeking help.
