105 North Union Street, Old Town waterfront · Free
The crown jewel of a family day in Old Town. Once a real torpedo factory, it's now three floors of working artist studios — and kids can wander in through any open door to watch painters, potters, and glassblowers at work. Admission has been free since 1974, and monthly “Second Friday” evenings add crafts, music, and extra energy.

Upstairs in the same building, budding diggers can watch archaeologists piece together the city's past and explore hands-on exhibits about what's been unearthed beneath Alexandria's streets. A natural add-on to a Torpedo Factory visit.

A grand 1753 mansion with family-friendly tours that bring colonial life to life — think powdered wigs, old-fashioned games, and a tucked-away garden. History that doesn't feel like homework.

A remarkably well-preserved Civil War fort set in a big, shady park — kids can walk the earthen ramparts and cannons, then spread out for a picnic. History and running-around room in one stop.

Beneath the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, south Old Town
Playgrounds for different ages, wide-open fields, fishing piers, and a historic lighthouse — all right on the river. One of the best all-around family parks in the city.

Few things thrill kids like a boat ride. City Cruises runs family-friendly sightseeing trips and a water taxi from the Old Town waterfront — an easy, breezy outing with skyline views (and, in season, a hop across to National Harbor's attractions).

A few tips for the day
Old Town is stroller-friendly but heavy on brick sidewalks, so sturdy wheels help; the free King Street Trolley is a fun, easy way to get from the Metro to the waterfront without little legs giving out. Many of the best options — the Torpedo Factory, the Archaeology Museum, the spray fountain (but that's not in Old Town), the playgrounds — are completely free. Hours and seasonal facilities vary, so confirm before you go, then pick a direction and make a day of it while summer lasts.
