The city keeps a full network of fenced dog parks and marked exercise areas; a few standouts, and where to find the rest.
4800 Brenman Park Drive, West End
A big, fenced park set in wooded surroundings, with trails and open space for after-play walks. One of the roomier options in town when your dog needs to really stretch out.
Duke Street
A local favorite for its wide-open space and a water feature dogs love to splash in on a warm day. Parking is limited, so it's an easy one to fold into a walk.
Carlyle Dog Run & Montgomery Park
Carlyle and North Old Town
Two well-loved fenced parks with separate areas for large and small dogs. Montgomery Park sits right by the farmers market, making for an easy weekend two-fer.

351 North Union Street, Old Town
A grassy off-leash exercise area right on the Old Town waterfront, with skyline-and-sailboat views and an easy stroll into the shops and cafés afterward. The quintessential Alexandria dog outing.
501 South Union Street, Old Town
At the quieter southern end of the waterfront, this off-the-beaten-path spot pairs an off-leash area with river frontage — a calmer alternative when Founders Park is busy.
Jones Point Park & the Mount Vernon Trail
Beneath the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, south Old Town
Leashed dogs are welcome along the whole 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail, and Jones Point makes a scenic turnaround — marsh, lighthouse, and river all in one, with plenty of room to sniff.

A few tips before you head out
Bring water and a collapsible bowl for warm afternoons, keep proof of vaccination handy (a few off-leash areas ask for it), and check posted signs for each park's leash and hours rules. Patios can be weather- and season-dependent, so a quick call ahead never hurts. Then leash up, head out and enjoy one of the most dog-loving cities on the river while the good weather lasts.
