According to author and life strategist Jim Phillips, most people he has encountered over the years are looking for more from life. They wonder if they have a purpose in life and what that purpose is.
This observation inspired Phillips to revise and expand his book, “The Key To LIFE: Living In Full Expression.”
In his book, Phillips says that we innately have purpose by the simple fact that we exist. He explains that our purpose is to live from our version of truth and be our authentic selves, however that might look, and that “there is no right path or wrong path, there is your path. Follow it.”
In order to discover our true selves we must shed the false identity that we create. This self-created identity is based off who we believe ourselves to be rather than who we truly are. Who we believe we are is often influenced by other people’s opinions or by what we do in life.
In a recent interview, Phillips spoke about how relevant this concept is for residents of Northern Virginia who often live fast-paced and career-focused lives. Phillips grew up in this area and graduated from Annandale High School and James Madison University. “We are stressed out constantly trying to live up to the identity we created…circumstances may change but you are not what you have,” Phillips explained.
Phillips says in his book that “the experiences we create provide the opportunity for our fullest expression and experience of self.” He offers advice and tools on how to shift your mindset and worldview to be open to this process of self-discovery.
Phillips admitted that he initially struggled with his qualification for writing a book on this topic. He acknowledged that he is a white male who was born into an American, middle-class family. Ultimately he felt that he would not have been inspired to write the book unless he was meant to share this message with others.
When asked how this life view explains issues like disease, disability, poverty and abuse, Phillips acknowledged that life can be a challenge but said that “we are born in the life circumstances that our soul needs…to gain what the soul is to gain in this lifetime.”
Phillips said his book is spiritual in nature but not religious. It is written for everybody but speaks most to those who are at the point in their life where they are searching for answers to the meaning of life and are open to looking at life differently.
