Some people are excited about the coming cicada invasion and others are dreading it. Either way, a lot of residents have been keeping their eyes peeled for cicadas emerging from the ground.
... So, where are they?!
Aside from a few sightings of cicadas here and there (see the social media posts below), the bugs are staying mostly underground for now because it's still a bit chilly outside.
In Alexandria, the next several days will bring periods of rain and high temperatures only in the 60s. Overnight temperatures could be in the 40s. That's cooler than the average daytime temperature in May, which is typically about 74 degrees.
Cicadas like to wait until it's just a little bit warmer.
The long-term forecast shows temperatures staying in the 60s during the days through about May 15 — then, temperatures will rise back into the 80s.
The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang is predicting cicadas may emerge en masse in "another week or so."
The delay will give homeowners a few more days to protect young trees and bushes from damage (here's how) and to work on dog training techniques that will help keep Fido from getting sick from eating too many crunchy bugs.
