They're the antidote to a busy day, and most of them are free. As the light turns golden and the gardens hit their late-season fullness, here's a guide to the city's most peaceful green escapes.
Secret gardens of Old Town

614 Oronoco Street, Old Town
Behind this stately historic home lies one of Old Town's loveliest hidden gardens — an award-winning half-acre of roses, boxwood, magnolias, and shaded benches that feels miles from the street just outside its gate. A serene stop, and a favorite for a quiet sit.
121 North Fairfax Street, Old Town
Step through the grand 1753 mansion (or around it) to find a tucked-away formal garden in the heart of Old Town — a green pocket of calm just steps from the King Street crowds, and an easy pairing with a waterfront stroll.
Green escapes just beyond the bustle
7931 East Boulevard Drive
The crown jewel of Alexandria's hidden gardens — and a genuine gem. Once part of George Washington's original farmland and now the headquarters of the American Horticultural Society, its 25-plus acres roll down to the Potomac with formal and naturalistic gardens, a whimsical Children's Garden, woodlands, and sweeping river views. Admission is free (donations welcomed), leashed dogs are welcome, and the grounds, recently saved and permanently protected, feel like a well-kept secret. Note its limited hours before you go.
4603 Green Spring Road
A horticulturist's playground just west of the city: demonstration gardens, ponds, wooded paths, and a historic house, all free to wander. Endlessly changing with the seasons and a lovely place to lose an hour.
Near the Mark Center, West End
A pocket of native forest, streams, and a small waterfall hidden improbably behind the West End's office towers — shaded trails that feel a world away from the pavement. Check current visiting rules before you head over.
Wild & quiet corners
5750 Sanger Avenue, West End
A tranquil urban wildlife sanctuary of woodland, wetland, and stream, threaded by an interpretive trail and anchored by the Jerome “Buddie” Ford Nature Center. One of the city's best-kept natural secrets — birdsong, not traffic.
501 South Union Street, Old Town
At the quieter southern end of the waterfront, this often-overlooked green offers river frontage and open lawn away from the Old Town crowds — a fine spot to spread a blanket and watch the water.
A few things to know
Several of these — River Farm especially — keep limited or seasonal hours and sit off the transit grid, so confirm times and plan to drive before you go. The historic house gardens may be tied to museum hours or tour access, so check ahead if the garden is your main goal. And late summer into early fall is a wonderful window: the gardens are still lush, the light is soft, and the crowds have thinned. Pack a book, find a bench, and let the city's quiet side work its magic.
