The childhood home of Robert E. Lee that was listed in April 2018 for $8.5 million dollars, was sold last week. Public records show it sold for almost half the original asking price at $4.7 million.
The 8,000 square foot house, originally built in 1795 is located at 607 Oronoco Street in Old Town Alexandria. The house is situated on a landscaped, half-acre lot across the street from the Lee-Fendall House Museum and Garden. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house operated as a museum from 1967 to 2000 before it was sold to Mark and Ann Kington.
The property was listed by Robert Hryniewicki and Christopher Leary of Washington Fine Properties. Lauren Bishop with McEnearney and Associates represented the buyer, who wishes to remain anonymous at this time and purchased the property through an LLC.
The home was built by John Potts in 1795, and Henry "Lighthorse" Lee purchased it in the early 1900s. Robert E. Lee grew up there and it was his family home until 1825. Other famous inhabitants of the home included Ada Hitchcock MacLeish, who helped establish the United Nations.
The home has six bedrooms, four full-baths and two half-baths, multiple fireplaces. It is four levels and features a separate two-car garage.
A virtual tour of the home is available here for a limited time.
