Lineage Apartments on North Henry Street
A new affordable housing project welcomed its first residents this week in Old Town.
The Lineage apartments on North Patrick Street is welcoming residents who make 30 to 60 percent of the area's median income.
The apartments replace 15 old Ramsey Homes with 52 new units — one, two and three bedroom apartments that are pet friendly.
The apartments have been in development by the Alexandria Housing Development Corp. for about four years, with tax credit financing for the project at and a loan from the City of Alexandria. Historic preservation advocates pushed for preserving the Ramsey Homes and renovating them, but city officials decided they could providing more housing by redeveloping.
Affordable housing is a serious issue in Alexandria, where housing prices continue to rise and developers seem more interested in "luxury apartments".
"Our brand new, affordable one, two and three bedroom apartment homes are designed with you in mind," according to Edgewater Management. "You'll love having the convenience of onsite, covered parking in our attached garage. When you open your door, you’ll be welcomed with your bright, light-filled apartment and 6-foot tall windows to overlook the views showcasing stunning Old Town Alexandria. When you aren’t enjoying the comforts of your brand-new, pet-friendly home, you can take advantage of everything that’s around."
There are several more affordable housing apartments coming, including a major redevelopment in south Old Town and a coming development on Seminary Road. In addition, AHDC is working on a major new building project in the Arlandria neighborhood.
