Community Housing Partners is proposing replacing the now-empty Land Rover dealership near the intersection of Duke Street and Telegraph Road with affordable housing.
Land Rover moved into a new dealership and service facility near the South Van Dorn Street and Beltway interchange earlier this year.
The new building would provide 94 affordable housing units, all with two or three bedrooms. The apartments would be affordable to households at 40 to 60% of the area median income. An underground parking garage with 73 spaces for cars and 22 bicycle spots is part of the plan.
The City of Alexandria and Virginia Dept. of Transportation are in the midst of a Duke Street Transitway study to find ways to help traffic move more smoothly along the corridor. Representatives from CHP said that their plan will not in any way affect that study or resulting actions. Residents will access the apartment complex from the intersection of Duke and Witter streets, where there is already a signal.
In response to a question regarding the impact on local schools, CHP representatives said, “Interestingly, we think that we will have 30% of units occupied by seniors (55+) with no children, based on our prior projects and market information.”
Community Housing Partners is in the business of affordable housing. The nonprofit organization was started in 1975. CHP is the developer of North Hill along the Richmond Highway Corridor in SE Fairfax County.
